In the midst of this fall’s busy whirlwind (and noticeable lack of blog updates), I made a few little messy experiments with color on these little pods. I realized too late that the key is to paint the insides of the cylinders first with a foam brush, before painting the outsides. Even though they’re a little sketchy and messy, I do like the purples and red-violets on the petal shapes.

So, I painted the inside instead of the outside. I thought something looked off. Do you think this will still look okay or should I go ahead and paint the entire thing?

I think the natural cardboard on the outside with color on the inside is a nice contrast. I’m curious what color you used on the inside. I’d love to see a photo of the final result!

Hi there! I’m trying to make one of these, but the question is, how put this on the wall? how to attach it?

Thanks for writing, Paula. Since the pieces are so light, I usually just hang one of the central tubes on a small nail hammered into the wall.

You have inspired me. I’m definitely going to give this a go. Any idea of what to use after painting it to ‘preserve’ it? Like a protective coating or something? I can imagine a lot of dust gathering on this and wanted to make sure I could clean it and prevent any fading as well…any thoughts?
Thanks!
Sarka

Hi Sarka! I’m glad you like this piece, and I’d love to see what you come up with.
As far as making the paint fade-resistant, you might want to try an acrylic polymer varnish. I believe Liquitex and Golden have their own acrylic varnishes. Gloss or matt medium might work as well. Let me know how your project turns out!
